Walter Ricciardi is Full Professor of Hygiene at the Faculty of Medicine, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Rome). He is the Chair of the Mission Board for Cancer, European Commission, and the Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Human Technopole Foundation.
Ricciardi is also the Chair of the European Mission Board for vaccination and the member of the International Honorary Advisory Faculty of the National Screening Advisory Committee (NSAC), Ireland.
In June 2017 he has been appointed “Commendatore” of the Italian Republic by Decree of the President of the Republic. He has been the President of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) (2020-2022) and from August 2015 to December 2018 he was the President of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
In May 2019, Ricciardi received the Laurea Honoris Causa at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA for his contribution to the development of World Public Health and in May 2023, he received the Hugh Levell Award of the World Federation of Public Health Associations, the world’s highest award for his career in Public Health.
He is the author of more than 400 scientific publications in impacted journals and 20 books and textbooks, and he is the Editor of the European Journal of Public Health, the Oxford Handbook of Public Health Practice and the founder of the journal Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health.
